From Generation to Generation: Racial Realities & Women's Health
Denise Carty, PhD, MA, MS, RN
​
Dr. Denise Carty is a seasoned health consultant in women's health, health education, and research. Dr. Carty provides expert guidance to communities and organizations on topics related to reproductive health, menopause and aging, and racial and ethnic health disparities. With a career spanning over 30 years, she has worked for various agencies as a women’s health nurse practitioner, public health officer, health scientist, and researcher dedicated to advancing women’s health and reducing racial and ethnic health disparities. Drawing on her clinical and public health background, Dr. Carty specializes in translating evidence-based research into practical education and policy solutions. She holds a PhD in Health Behavior and Health Education from the University of Michigan and master’s degrees in both African American Studies and Nursing from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Lola Russell, MDiv, PhD

Dr. Russell is a visionary pastor, prophetic communicator, and public theologian whose voice speaks powerfully at the intersection of faith, health, and justice. A seasoned bivocational pastor of emerging congregations, she brings both pulpit power and policy wisdom—with years of leadership in the government, public health, and political sectors. Rooted in Womanist theology and guided by a deep love for her people, Dr. Russell is a skilled practitioner of adult learning theory and praxis, strategic communications, and media engagement. She doesn’t just preach—she teaches, quips, and empowers communities to rise. A natural storyteller and thought leader, Dr. Russell has shaped conversations in journalism, public affairs, and pastoral ministry, always centering truth, healing, and liberation. She holds degrees from Georgia State University, Turner Theological Seminary at the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC), and earned her Ph.D. from the University of Georgia—bringing academic brilliance to the heart of community transformation.
