Paradise Baptist Church Celebrates 160 Years of Faith, Family, and Community Leadership

“Remembering the Past, Celebrating the Present, Envisioning the Future”

ATLANTA, GA — Paradise Missionary Baptist Church proudly celebrates its 160th Anniversary in 2025, honoring a legacy that spans generations of faith, leadership, and service to the Atlanta community. Founded in 1865, Paradise has remained a spiritual anchor and beacon of hope in the heart of the city for over a century and a half.

Led by Dr. Charles A. Harper III, Lead Pastor, and Rev. S. Tarnace Watkins, Sr., Executive Pastor, the church has launched a yearlong celebration under the theme: “Remembering the Past, Celebrating the Present, Envisioning the Future.” The anniversary reflects the church’s enduring commitment to preaching the gospel, strengthening families, developing leaders, and serving the broader community.

Since its founding by Dinah Watts Pace in 1865, Paradise has been a cornerstone of leadership and support within the Summerhill and Grove Park communities. Over the years, the church has nurtured countless leaders who have emerged to make significant contributions both locally and beyond. Through its outreach programs, Paradise actively addresses the evolving needs of the community, providing essential resources and support to those facing challenges in food insecurity, housing, and child care. This commitment to service and empowerment reflects the church's enduring mission to share the gospel of Jesus by fostering a strong, resilient community.

Latonya NAME, CEO of PAWS Atlanta shared, "Our collaboration with Paradise at  PAWS Atlanta is vital in addressing the unique challenges faced by at-risk youth in the Grove Park community. Together, we are not just providing programs; we are fostering resilience and creating pathways for these young individuals to realize their potential and build brighter futures."

A Year of Milestones

Throughout the anniversary year, the church has hosted several impactful events, including:

  • In February, every Sunday was set aside as Heritage Sunday, a time to honor both our rich church history and the history makers who have shaped Paradise, greater Atlanta, and even our nation.

  • As part of our 160th Anniversary celebration, Paradise Baptist Church hosted a special tour of South-View Cemetery, one of Atlanta’s most historic resting places and the final home of many trailblazers of faith, justice, and community leadership.

  • Paradise Baptist Church was honored to present a live production of the Dinah Watts Pace story, celebrating the remarkable life and legacy of our church's founder.

  • The Women's Ministry hosted “Generational Grace: A Conference for the Soul, Body, and Mind.”

As we commemorate 160 years of faith, community, and service, we recognize our deep roots in the history of Atlanta, our nation, and the Black church. We honor the legacy of those who paved the way for us, and together, we stand as pillars in our community, dedicated to fostering a future that meets the needs of God’s people.” Reverend Doctor Charles A. Harper III, Lead Pastor at Paradise Baptist Church shared.
